Requirements

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 45% sitting, 10% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

Network Security Engineer Dist Coord 1 PT / Net Sec Engineer

 

Purpose Statement

The job of Network Information Security Engineer/Analyst is done for the purpose/s of ensuring the overall security compliance of the district network, servers, devices, technology services, data, and users in accordance with established Information Technology guidelines and best practices; Including network security, network threat hunting, network device security hardening, investigation into cyber security incidents, and offering security best practices for all IT based district solutions.

Essential Functions


  • Advises and recommends account security features and configurations (e.g., protocols, security features for purchasing technology solutions, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring essential application security features and measures are in place increasing district account and network security. Monitors the network security systems for the purpose of ensuring issues associated with vulnerabilities and threat hunting are addressed.
  • Investigates and documents security breaches and other cybersecurity incidents for the purpose of ensuring future incidents can be avoided.
  • Maintain and operate software to protect systems and information infrastructure and data encryption programs.
  • Performs security tests, reviews results, and recommends best practices in collaboration with the Technology leadership team (e.g. for Session, Presentation, and Application layers of the OSI model, etc.) for the purpose of identifying network and computer device vulnerabilities.
  • Gather and correlate data from multiple device management systems and identify devices of concern and coordinate with other team members the remediation of those devices.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g., permission levels, network identification, security access, licenses, work logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, and providing reference and audit trails.
  • Works with IT support staff throughout the district on overall network security for the purpose of monitoring the security of network enterprise systems, network traffic, and other threat vectors that are identified as vulnerable paths to compromise district systems, solutions, and data.

  • Researches current and emerging technologies and software applications for the purpose of providing analysis for the district's technology needs.

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • Participate in technology planning efforts and new initiatives.
  • Support all information systems staff in accomplishing their assigned responsibilities.
    Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., procedures, documentation, reports, memos, letters, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written references, and/or conveying information.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and/or trainings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Participates in and advises key decision-making in relation to the security of network devices, servers, user data, computer-based devices, antivirus, and malware protection, and e-mail security for the purpose of providing input to the administration of recommended procedures and policies related to the protection of district network resources and solutions, and user data.
  • Performs initial security assessment of servers, switches, and router set-ups (e.g., installation, testing, configuring, assigning passwords, security clearances, imaging, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the basic computer processing needs of the users.
  • Provides in-service training for general computer use and/or security, software applications, and file server operations for the purpose of ensuring the efficient use of computers and/or software applications.
  • Responds to requests for help, repairs, training, and/or potential upgrades, etc. by telephone or e-mail for the purpose of providing information, scheduling appointments, and/or referring to alternate resources.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of district personnel for the purpose of providing support, technical advice, and operational assistance.
  • The incumbent is responsible to follow all policies and guidelines as detailed by District policy

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
