  • 3 years of experience teaching or working in Computer Science or other related fields

Schedule:

Must be available to work 25 hours per week—not including prep time—from June 5, 2023, to July 23, 2022, Monday-Thursday, and attend two hours of training prior to June 1, 2022.

Computer Science Program Instructor Job Description

UVU PREP provides three summers of rigorous academic instruction, educational hands-on projects, challenging homework assignments, daily career awareness, and field trips for 7th, 8th,
and 9th-grade students who have an interest and aptitude in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics fields. UVU PREP strives to provide opportunities for underrepresented and
first-generation students to pursue STEM studies and careers.

UVU PREP Computer Science instructor needs to be a certified teacher, have experience in higher education instruction, or have comparable experience. He or she will need to know the Computer
Science concepts, models, methodologies, and applications, as well as methods for teaching Computer Science to youth.

UVU PREP Computer Science instructor will manage instructional time to teach the Computer Science curriculum for three 90-minute class sections Monday-Thursday to groups of 30+
students aged 14-15 for approximately six weeks. Curriculum will be provided but will need to be tailored to student needs.

UVU PREP Computer Science instructor will coordinate hands-on, problem-based labs with the Teaching Assistant assigned to support their students' learning.

Summary of Duties include: 
  •  Preparing and delivering a lesson to three classes per day, including projects;
  •  Instructing students, giving appropriate feedback, and coordinating with the Teaching Assistant to maintain records of students' progress and development;
  •  Preparing students for assessments and examinations;
  •  Managing student behavior in the classroom to create a safe learning environment;
  •  Supervising and supporting the work of the Teaching Assistant;
  •  Participating in and supporting informal learning activities,
  •  Participating in UVU PREP weekly staff meetings and/or training events;
  •  Prepare and grade quizzes, tests, pre- and post-tests, and other assessments;
  •  Instruct students on how computers work, including the basic science and mathematics behind their operation and the hardware and software built on those foundations.
  •  Other duties as assigned

Course Core Concepts:
Computer Science uses foundational concepts from the Year 1 and Year 2 courses and applies them to building and programming. The Computer Science instructor, under the supervision of
the SCUP Director and Curriculum Coordinator, has the freedom to cater the material to their own strengths and the skills of the students. Available technology may also change the way this
course is taught. The curriculum provided should be used as a guide, but the instructor should understand they have freedom within the entire Computer Science field.
  •  Using computational thinking to solve problems
  •  Using the Design Process to create robotic projects
  •  Debugging programs
  •  Basic understanding of how the computer works
  •  Scratch Programming Language
  •  Python Programming Language
  •  Using Hardware and Software components
  •  Use flowcharts/pseudocode to build algorithms

  •  Coding – block coding, C++
 
Skills:
  •  Lead classroom discussions/activities
  •  Ability to utilize effective verbal and written communication skills
  •  Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student records
 
Abilities:
  •  Ability to teach students basic Computer Science concepts and their application
  •  Ability to cover the Core Concepts listed above and teach them with accuracy and clarity
  •  Ability to assess student work according to general instructional standards
  •  Supervise three classes of 30+ middle school students
