Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree in Elementary Education. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Utah State Teaching Certificate with Elementary Education endorsement.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to use technology for instructional purposes and to teach current technology skills and the use of technology tools for grade level. Ability to apply knowledge about legal issues to the work setting.

Description

Teacher, Elementary

SUMMARY: Teaches literacy and numeracy through a variety of subjects in a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Establishes effective rapport with pupils in order to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed for a good educational foundation. Establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
Teaches the Utah State Core and Provo School District Standards and Benchmarks for Elementary Education at the assigned grade level.

Models Principles of Effective Teaching and maintains a professional demeanor.
Performs ongoing, frequent, and specific assessments to gauge the learning of students. Models the characteristics of behavior as outlined in the Provo School District Character Education statement.
Instructs effectively with technology and teaches tools of technology within coursework. Modifies instruction for students with disabilities.
Modifies instruction for students whose native language is other than English. Demonstrates professional etiquette to colleagues and is a contributing member of the school’s community.
Actively involves parents in their child’s education, including the provision of frequent indicators of progress and upcoming lesson objectives and standards.
Confers with students, parents, and school counselor/administrator to resolve student concerns.
Selects, stores, orders, issues, cares for, and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies used in the classroom.
Fosters cooperative social behavior to assist children in forming satisfying relationships with other children and adults.
Encourages students in singing, dancing, rhythmic activities, and in use of art materials, to promote self-expression and appreciation of aesthetic experience.
Instructs children in practices of personal cleanliness and self-care.
Maintains a welcoming, orderly, safe, and attractive physical environment in the classroom. Establishes and maintains high standards of student behavior.
Incorporates Schools-to-Careers as appropriate.
Annually completes an individualized Student Education Plan (SEP) for each student with the students and his/her parents.
Prepares lesson plans for substitutes.
Participates in ongoing professional development.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises students, volunteers, student teachers, and paraprofessionals.
