Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
 
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Responsibility

Work Environment 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations in a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere. 

Experience: Job related experience is required.

Education: 
Bachelor's degree in job related area with an emphasis in Gifted and Talented. Gifted and Talented Endorsement is required or must be obtained within the first year of employment as a condition of continued employment.

Description
Teacher - Elementary Gifted and Talented - Open until filled

Purpose Statement

The job of Teacher - Elementary Gifted and Talented is done for the purpose/s of supporting the instructional process by serving as a teacher in the district's Gifted and Talented magnet program for identified students from across the district. 

The teacher provides advanced learning opportunities through rigorous, enriched instruction aligned with Utah Core Standards, district curriculum, and research-based instructional practices for advanced learners. Instruction emphasizes depth of understanding, intellectual challenge, creativity and complex problem solving. 

The teacher implements district -developed Gifted and Talented curriculum, instructional resources, and learning experiences designed to support advanced academic development while collaborating with the host school community. 

This position differs from a traditional elementary teaching assignment in that it provides specialized instruction for identified advanced learners within a districtwide magnet program while maintaining collaboration and alignment with the host school's professional learning community. 


Essential Functions


Administers instructional activities and assessments for the purpose of evaluating student competency and supporting individual learning plans.
Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress (e.g. progress reports, report cards, parent teacher conferences, digital and written communications, etc.) for the purpose of resolving concerns, communicating expectations, grades, student achievement, behavior; and to reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
Assesses student progress toward instructional objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration.
Attends work regularly to provide continuity and high-quality educational experiences for the purpose of providing support to advanced learners and families.
Collaborates with district program leadership and colleagues for the purpose of supporting consistent implementation of the districtwide Gifted and Talented magnet program model.
Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and community partners to improve student outcomes and support school improvement goals for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
Collaborates with the host school's professional learning communities for the purpose of participating in school­based activities consistent with expectations for all faculty members.
Contributes to the ongoing development and improvement of the district's Gifted and Talented magnet program through collaboration , reflection, and professional learning for the purpose of creating and implementing accelerated, high-level learning opportunities.
Coordinates the work of student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers for the purpose of providing and supporting an effective individual advanced learner classroom program.
Creates learning experiences and exploration of complex concepts for the purpose of promoting intellectual curiosity and independent thinking.
Designs and delivers instruction that emphasizes depth, complexity and interdisciplinary connections for the advanced learners.
Designs learning experiences that encourage students to think deeply and make interdisciplinary connections for the purpose of engaging students in sustained investigation of ideas.
Differentiates instruction through a variety of instructional strategies and activities; providing academic and social­emotional instruction for characteristics of advanced learners for the purpose of supporting students to have appropriate interventions as advanced learners.
Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
Implements approved academic and behavior plans for students as directed by the school administration and in collaboration with parents/guardians (e.g. 504 plans, IEP plans, special health-care plans, etc.) for the purpose of promoting student achievement and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
Implements district-developed Gifted and Talented curriculum, instructional resources and learning experiences for the purpose of supporting advanced academic development.
Maintains high expectations for student learning through rigorous inquiry, complex problem solving and opportunities for deep exploration of content and ideas for the purpose of challenging and enriching educational experiences that foster unique intellectual and creative needs of identified advanced learners students.
Manages student behavior with appropriate strategies (e.g. PBIS, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
Models professionalism in accordance with district policies and expectations for the purpose of providing effective instruction, protecting students, and demonstrating appropriate social and interpersonal behaviors at all times.
Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, hallways, common areas, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
Organizes age appropriate learning activities for the purpose of promoting engagement and ensuring participation in student learning activities.
Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. PLC and grade level meetings, committee assignments" etc.) for the purpose of supporting collaboration and shared responsibility for student success.
Participates in all emergency preparedness drills and training as directed by the school administration (e.g. Fire, Evacuation, Lockdown, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and preparation of all students and staff members for emergency situations.
Participates in professional learning related to gifted and talented education and advanced learner development for the purpose of serving as a resource to ensure enrichment to students and families.
Prepares required documentation (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, parent communications etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
Promotes a classroom culture that values intellectual curiosity, academic challenge, and thoughtful exploration of complex ideas for the purpose of addressing the specific affective and cognitive needs of gifted children, including asynchronous development.
Provides high quality instruction using proven instructional strategies, technology, and other resources for the purpose of promoting growth and student achievement aligned with individual advanced academic advancement.
Reports incidents related to school safety to appropriate school administration, social workers, or counseling staff (e.g. fights, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of responding to critical needs, maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to District Policy and State Law.
Responds appropriately to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving student needs, immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Responds to inquires from a variety of sources in a timely manner (e.g. other teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.
Supports colleagues through instructional collaboration and shared planning for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of established curriculum and/or individual student plans.
Supports students learning (e.g. advanced reasoning, creative thinking, etc.) for the purpose of promoting a desire to explore ideas in greater depth and complexity.
Utilizes research-based instructional practices including (e.g. inquiry-based learning, complex problem solving, creativity, and sustained investigation of ideas, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the achievement of advanced learners.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
